OPPO officially unveiled its first foldable flagship smartphone, the OPPO Find N, at the company’s INNO DAY 2021 conference last week where it also showed off its new imaging NPU and OPPO Air Glass wearable.
“New form factors are ushering in an exciting new time in smartphone technology. OPPO has invested a significant amount of time and effort into coming up with a better approach to a foldable smartphone, experimenting with a range of form factors, hinge designs, display materials and aspect ratios, to create a new device that meets the needs of more users. With the OPPO Find N, we aim to change people’s perceptions about what a smartphone can offer and begin making foldable devices more accessible to an even larger audience,” said Pete Lau, OPPO Chief Product Officer.
OPPO has chosen to utilize a landscape ratio for the design of the Find N’s inner display, leading to a 7.1-inch display with an aspect ratio of 8.4:9. As for its outer display, it measures 5.49 niches with an 18:9 aspect ratio. The fold of the Find N features the company’s new Flexion Hinge that contains 136 different components and a water-drop hinge design, which the company says eliminates the gap between the two sides of the folded display and leads to a minimal display crease that is 80% less noticeable compared to other folding displays.
The Flexion Hinge can also be unfolded at any angle between 50-120 degrees so the device can freely stand on its own, whether to accommodate the range of FlexForm Mode software features that OPPO has designed or simply to serve as its own tripod for videos or calls.
OPPO calls the folding display on the Find N the Serene Display, which is a 12-layer screen that includes a 0.03mm Flexion UTG (ultra-thin glass) layer that is capable of easily bending without sacrificing durability. According to OPPO, the Serene Display can be folded over 200,000 times before users can experience a noticeable crease in the screen. Both the inner and outer display of the Find N feature over 10,000 automatic brightness levels and a peak brightness of up to 1,000 nits.
Powering the Find N is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 mobile platform along with 12GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 512GB of UFS 3.1 storage. It also features a 4,500 mAh battery that supports 33W SUPERVOOC Flash Charge, 15W AIRVOOC wireless charging, and 10W reverse wireless charging. Other features of the Find N include a side-mounted fingerprint sensor, a 50-megapixel rear camera with a Sony IMX 766 main sensor coupled with a 16-megapixel ultra-wide lens and a 13-megapixel telephoto lens. There are also selfie cameras on both the inner and outer displays.
The OPPO Find N will be available in China starting December 23, 2021, with a starting price of RMB 7,699 (~PHP 60,000). No word yet if and when the device will be released globally.
